Anchor the comparison to a known shade
Place the existing product name and shade beside the candidate in your notes. Look for whether the candidate is redder, browner, more orange, more purple, lighter or deeper. These relative descriptions are often easier to use than trying to identify one permanent undertone category for your face.
Control the viewing conditions
Compare under the same lighting and avoid making a final decision from a heavily filtered photograph. A phone display can shift saturation and brightness. If an in-person test is available, follow the counter hygiene procedure and use a fresh applicator rather than a shared tube directly on the lips.
Keep finish in the comparison
A shiny sheer rose and a fully opaque matte rose can look very different even when their color descriptions sound similar. Note both finish and coverage. Use our finish planner to narrow the format, then compare the color family; it is a preference tool, not an automated skin analysis or shade-matching guarantee.
Use a two-candidate decision instead of an undertone quiz
Choose two candidates with meaningfully different effects, such as a more orange red and a more berry red, while keeping coverage similar. Compare each with the look you actually want. If you prefer one, write down the visible difference that helped you decide. This produces a reusable preference note without claiming that a vein-color test or a single photograph has diagnosed the only colors you can wear. If you enjoy both, there is no requirement to force one into a wrong category.
Before you decide
- Describe the difference from a known shade.
- Use consistent light for comparisons.
- Choose a color because you enjoy its effect, not a rigid undertone rule.
